Pastoral Care
Pastoral Care in the Macarthur Health System – Update.
The Macarthur Health System Pastoral Care Service is going well and we thank God for His blessing. The Pastoral Care Team which is voluntary comprises of more than 50 Trained Pastoral Carers.
This allows for visitation of Hospital Patients on regular and mostly on a daily basis. The Pastoral Carers are drawn from many areas of the Community covering many Denominations and Religious groups so that all members of the community can be cared for. The Pastoral Care Service shares with Hospital patients alone with their families and friends when called upon along with Hospital Staff when required.

Kairos
Kairos is an ecumenical ministry in prison.
The mission of Kairos Prison Ministry Australia is to bring Christ’s love and forgiveness to all incarcerated individuals, their families,
and those who work with them, and to assist in the transition to becoming a productive citizen. The focus of the Kairos ministry is on the common belief of all Christians: that God loves us all, and He saves us from our sin through the sacrifice of His son Jesus, who gives us eternal hope and joy through His resurrection.
Churches are stakeholders in what happens in Correctional Institutions, not because churches are focused on the Institution, but because the family of Christ is called to ‘visit the prisoner’. Mt 25:36. For most of us this is a foreign concept.
Kairos provides an opportunity for Churches to participate at a number of levels in their calling to ‘visit the prisoner’. Church members can serve on a team that actually goes inside the Institution, or they can offer support to those who do. In either case the aim is to bring changed hearts that lead to changed lives for the prison inmates, Institution officials, and Church members.
Prayer is the foundation of all we do in Kairos.
Part of the Kairos Leaders prayer is:- ‘Grant that we may be united in a common purpose and share is a single spirit. . . your spirit, Lord Jesus. Grant that your attractive goodness may be seen in all of our faces, your warm accents of love heard in all of our words. In our lives, may we show something of you to the world, something which proclaims your living presence among us. . . Amen
Kairos is active in the US (33 States), Costa Rica, England, Australia, South Africa and Canada. Currently 20,000 men and women are introduced to the program worldwide each year. In Australia in 2005 more than 2,000 volunteers enabled over 3,000 prison residents the opportunity to attend a Kairos Short course, and continuing Journey Program.
Does Kairos really make a long-term difference?
In the US, the Florida Department of Corrections performed a study covering 505 inmates of Union Correctional Institution who had attended Kairos on eleven short courses. This study looked at the rate of the re-offense of the 505 to a non-Kairos control group. The control group re-offended at the rate of 23.4%. Those who attended a Kairos Short Course and remained active in the program reoffended at the rate of 10% i.e. a 57% drop in the recidivism rate.
It appears from current trends that a similar drop in re-offense is becoming evident in Australia.

Several of us from local churches participate with Kairos Prison Ministry at Emu Plains Woman’s Correctional Institution. We run an ongoing program each Wednesday afternoon. There are many ways church members can offer support to this ministry, including, financial,
practical, and prayerful. Perhaps God is calling you to put you name forward to attend a closing ceremony of a short course and hear from the residents the impact Kairos has made on them. To offer your support please contact Anne Willott,
